HOMELESS AWARENESS WEEK

 November 11-17, 2007

In an ideal world everyone has a roof overhead, clothes on their back, and food in their stomach. Reality shows us that this is not the case. The October 2004 Wilder Research Study on Homelessness counted 393 persons living on the street or accessing shelters and transitional housing facilities in the Fargo-Moorhead Community.

In a community known for it's midwestern hospitality, it is intolerable for any member of our community to be homeless. Homelessness or the threat of homelessness affects individuals and families from every segment of our population.

National Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week is celebrated each year the week before Thanksgiving in an effort to raise awareness about the problems of hunger and homelessness.

Why is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week so important?  Participating in National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week not only brings greater awareness to your community, but also helps to promote the national endeavor to end hunger and homelessness. The plight of those without a home can be both lonely and difficult. Addressing their struggles by organizing and participating in this week may bring greater solidarity and understanding, as well as promote future involvement. Events, such as "One Night Without a Home," help people realize the difficulties that homeless persons daily face. It is imperative to dispel myths that label homelessness as someone else's problem or claim that an end to homelessness is impossible.

Join us! Join the F-M Coalition for the Homeless and the Homeless to Housed Task Force in planning local activites and events to coincide with national efforts.  Past activities included an essay contest, dance, homeless panel, film, and coloring contest.  If you are interested in helping to plan and promote this years events, please contact: Carla Solem @ 306-1944 or carlas@cableone.net.
