HISTORY

CUFH has long been recognized in the community for its dedication to serving the hungry and homeless.  In 1987, Churches United For the Homeless (CUFH) was founded by 10 local churches to provide emergency shelter, food and emotional support to homeless men, women and families.

In 1999, CUFH was awarded Federal McKinney-Vento Act Funding allowing CUFH to expand services to meet the needs of persons as they transition out of the shelter. CUFH leases 8 apartment units to provide transitional support to two-parent families, male head of household families and single males.

In 2000, CUFH was asked to serve as fund manager for a communal fund established by local area churches. The fund provides direct financial support to individuals for transportation, housing, education and employment related needs.

In 2002, CUFH began a Capital Campaign to fund the purchase and/or renovation of a new shelter that could adequately met the organizations health, safety and space needs as the old renovated Swedish Church which housed CUFH since its inception was increasingly becoming a financial, space and health concern.

On September 16, 2004, CUFH fulfilled a long-term dream by moving into the newly renovated building at 1901 1st Avenue North in Moorhead. The new location allowed Churches United to expand shelter, on-site meal, food pantry and outreach supports.

Today, Churches United houses an average of 800+ men, women and families each year, serves over 50,000 meals and provides food baskets to over 1,000 households. Additionally, the shelter provides case management, financial assistance (transportation and employment related expenses), a free thrift store, a community nurse, on-site diagnostic assessments, on-site counseling, and various on-site outreach supports.
